YOU DID SAY MELTON MOWBRAY?
05/03/2026

Having seen some stunning images from Bradgate Park on the Banbury Photography Group Facebook page and, having been told by a friend that there was an interesting town in Leicestershire that started with M, I decided to combine the two and booked into the Premier Inn in Melton Mowbray.
Having taken a slightly indirect route via the Greggs at Gaydon we arrived at Bradgate Park. As this was our first visit we decided to walk around the perimeter (although we did have to stop about a third of the way round for a coffee and a shared sausage roll). With the benefit of hindsight this was not a good decision; we would probably have seen more deer if we had crossed the middle of the park, as it was we did see some peacocks and there is an image of one in the header to this article.
Leaving the park we set off for the town beginning with M, i.e. Melton Mowbray. We quickly located the Premier Inn and (nothing like so quickly) found the car park, just behind the hotel but accessed by a circuitous route.
Having checked in we “hit the town” - first impressions were that it was difficult to see what all the fuss was about! On one (very) positive note we quickly came across the famous (and possibly world famous) pork pie shop and obviously had to purchase a couple of pies from the hundreds on display. Having found a pub which amazingly sold both London Pride and Bass, and having ordered a pint of Bass, I took the opportunity to contact the aforementioned friend to check that we were in the right town beginning with M - it’s a cock-up, we were meant to be in Market Harborough, although we were able to confirm that we had procured the obligatory pork pies!
Notwithstanding this minor logistical error we visited another of Melton Mowbray’s hostelries before calling in at the Lidl next to the Premier Inn for essential supplies and calling it “a day”.
The next day began with a really excellent “cooked to order” Premier Inn breakfast and we set sail for home with the top down. There was only one thing left to do; arrange a trip to Market Harborough!
