THIRD IMAGE LUCKY
01/11/2022
31st October, Halloween and a Banbury Camera Club PDI competition. I had submitted my two entries, a colour image of an egret and a mono close up of a heron's head but I got a message to say that three entries were being permitted. Having recently taken some more (yes more) Overflow images I was tempted but couldn't quite make up my mind when my eyes alighted on a print of a small waterfall at Wain Wath Force in Swaledale which happened to be lying by my desk. It is an image that I like and it had been reasonably successful in a Banbury Photography Facebook Group cover competition receiving 16 "likes" against the winning entries 17 (in fact I'm 95% sure that I had at one point reached 17 "likes" so someone must have "unliked" my image). I brought the edited JPEG up in Photoshop Elements and gave it a slightly tighter crop, resized it and submitted it as my third entry. On the night there were 60 entries, including, as usual, some that I thought were of a very high quality. The judge commented on all 60 images and then short-listed 19 for further review. Only my Wain Wath Force image made the cut although he did hesitate over my egret. He then selected 3 as "commended", 3 as "highly commended" 2 as "joint-third" and still my image was sitting there "out in the cold". It wasn't selected in 2nd place and I have to say I was quite surprised (but pleasantly of course) when he announced that the winner was "the waterfall". As always it is very encouraging to come even close to winning in a Banbury Camera Club competition as there are some very talented photographers in the club.
