TWO DAYS (AND ONE NIGHT) IN THE COTSWOLDS
03/07/2025
A full diary (Mrs. M, not me) meant that we were only able to get away for one night so I booked us into The Eight Bells in Chipping Campden where we had recently had lunch and had found it to be a very pleasant old fashioned pub with rooms.
An early start was neither required or possible as Mel, the mobile hairdresser, was due at 9am for our regular trims so we set off at around 10am.
I had a plan; drive to Broadway, complete the circular walk to Broadway Tower, a quick drink in Broadway and then drive over to Chipping Campden for the night and complete the circular walk to Dover's Hill the next day. I had printed off the walk details in advance from, I believe, The Cotswold Way website.
All was going to plan until Mrs. M realised that a walk from Broadway to the Tower may involve some steeper sections, which it did! Despite her protestations we reached the Tower in one piece and stopped for our homemade chicken salad rolls (made by moi) and then for a tea and coffee from the cafe. We decided against going to the top of the tower so, after taking a few images, set off on the return leg narrowly avoiding taking the wrong route after I consulted another couple who were returning having themselves taken the wrong route! At least it was all downhill from here. The downhill trend continued in Broadway; the only "pub" which we came across, The Tavern (part of the Lygon Arms Hotel), somehow managed to charge £21 for a wine, a beer and a soda water; we had paid less than £8 for a similar round in Torquay a fortnight earlier! Needless to stay we didn't stop for a second drink.
Arriving at Chipping Campden we were able to park close to The Eight Bells so we checked in and left for a wander around. On leaving the pub there was a parking space right outside so I went to fetch the car whilst Mrs. M guarded the space; this didn't work too well as a van driver "stole" it (to be fair he was very apologetic and when we returned to the pub for pre-dinner drinks he offered to buy me a drink, of course there was no need, "first come, first served").
I had booked us into the dining room in the pub but Mrs. M decided she would rather eat outside as the weather was very pleasant. Mrs. M continued her newly found love affair with Thai curry, I had a burger. Another drink (Old Hookey was on draught but, in my opinion, not quite "up to scratch") and we turned in for what turned out be quite a long night as the room was quite warm but at least the nearby church clock seemed to be silent between 1am and 6am!
After an excellent breakfast we set off for Dover's Hill - by car - Mrs. M was "not walking up another hill - ever again". To be fair Dover's Hill was a bit of a disappointment so we didn't linger and headed off to Snowshill to the Lavender Farm where we both took lots of images. A stop off at The Plough Inn at Stretton On Fosse for a sandwich lunch (which was so large it also served as my supper later in the day) and we arrived home mid-afternoon. There are some images in The Cotswolds Callery.
