THE HOSTE
17/10/2025

The Hoste Fire
During previous visits to North Norfolk we have on a couple of occasions called in at the Hoste in Burnham Market and thought that it would be a nice place to stay so we booked for a couple of nights starting on 15th October.
The day got off to an inauspicious start with the Z4 telling me something like “the reversing assistant is not functioning correctly” and the satnav instructions seemed rather vague. Neither of these issues caused a problem and over a breakfast stop on the outskirts of Wellingborough (no G-word involved) a quick google resulted a a re-set of the I-drive and a return to normality.
First scheduled stop was Felbrigg Hall, a NationalTrust property with rather nice gardens, a keen interest of Mrs. M. The gardens were impressive, the not quite so much so but interesting nonetheless.
We then headed for The Hoste and checked in to Room 71, the significance of this will become clear later. The Hoste was much larger than I expected, with (I think) 49 rooms and plenty of parking. We had a wander round the village (or town?) and picked up some essential supplies from the local convenience store before returning to the Hoste for drinks and dinner.
Day 2. It is usually my task to establish how the shower works in the various hotels in which we stop but on this occasion I was stumped; it remained as dry as The Sahara Desert! Luckily the shower was of the “over the bath” variety (not favoured by Mrs. M) so we were still able to wash. After reporting the malfunctioning (or to be technically correct the non-functioning) shower ands pleasant Hoste breakfast we set off for The Norfolk Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve at Cley and Salthouse Marshes. I’ve been here a couple of times before but on previous occasions have not bothered to walk over the marshes to the hides so this time we did. We must have picked a bad day as, to be honest, I’ve seen more wildlife whilst walking around Grimsbury Reservoir in Banbury!
From here we drove along the coast through Cley and on to Sheringham where there were a few boats drawn up on a shingle beach and several pubs so we called into one for “a quick one”. Sheringham is actually quite a pleasant little town with a good array of shops. We then drove on down to Cromer but didn’t stop as there didn’t appear to be anything of interest. We called in at Burnham Overy Staithe on the way back to The Hoste where we again had a few drinks and dinner in the bar. As our shower had not been repaired we were moved into Room 72 which was much better with a proper walk-in shower.
Day 3. As we checked out the receptionist commented “ remember to book direct next time and ask for Room 72!” We stocked up with some scallops and mackerel from the local fishmonger and a a few things from the butcher across the road before setting off for home, an enjoyable trip but no photography of note.
